Gnarly Dude, Snow Boarder Sage Kotsenburg Loses Russians in Translation, “Stoked”

20 Year-old from Utah,
snowboarder,
Sage Kotsenburg,
is our own- JEFF SPICOLI look alike
who had a gnarly ride in Russia Sochi Olympics.

Each sport and generation have a language
all their own. ‘SICK’ and ‘Gnarly’ or
‘STOKED’ are just a few for Sage.

Saturday during Kotsenburg’s gold-medal press conference
after his upset win in men’s slopestyle,
Interpreters thought he was drunk when Sage said he was ‘stoked’.

Al Jazeera America explains the lost-in-translation issue::

“In Russian, a ‘grab’ is a grab, ‘cab’ is like cab, and even though there’s a Russian word for rail, we say, ‘rail.’ But jump is ‘tramplin,’ and a spin is ‘vraschenije,’ and flip is ‘salto.’”

What about “stoked”?

After a pause and some prodding, Yakimenko admitted, “We used the word for ‘under the influence of alcohol’ which is kind of like, ‘under the fly.’”

Lesokhin mostly noticed that Kotsenburg “said ‘sick’ a lot.” The Russian word for sick, bolnoy, “is bad, like you have a disease or something,” Yakimenko said. But there are plenty of Russian words for crazy, so the duo substituted “bezumny,” “kruto,” or “sumasshedshy.”

This quote from Kotsenburg’s press conference gives a new slant:

“I heard it’s going to be crazy. I’m definitely stoked to be a part of it,” he said. “Obviously I’m stoked to get gold and take whatever comes with it.”

When I lived in LA, the slang terms came from “the valley” and surfers!
‘Awesome’ ‘totally tubular’ ‘gnarly’ ‘stoked’ ‘RAD’ -it was all fun and obviously still here today in Russia!

Reunions and Aging. Watch a girl age decades only in minutes

danielle-cnet-top

Years pass by quickly, and this morning
I stumbled across this article showing
Danielle aging from a child to a mature woman.

I am going to a 40 yr reunion shortly
and although we all think of ourselves as
young, or younger than our bodies are, this
film clip example will play itself out as we look
in admiration at someone who seems to have had
the great genetics or lifestyle to hold back the
hands of time. Or will we quietly think, omg
they sure aged fast..

This is a new video from filmmaker
Anthony Cerniello and it is so striking.
It shows a girl slowly and almost
imperceptibly aging decades in under 4 minutes.

“Danielle,” embedded below, was produced
with a team of animators and a still
photographer, Keith Sirchio.
The sound track is from Mark Revely.

Her face becomes longer, thinner, her bone
structure more defined, and then under eyes and
her skin, hair show signs of age, graying/thinning
as she seems to enter the middle years
of her life.

For Photo buffs, this is amazing work.

Last year, Cerniello attended his
friend Danielle’s family reunion.
He and Sirchio took portraits of
her relatives of all ages with a
Hasselblad medium-format camera.
After scanning the negatives,
they chose those relatives with
similar bone structure to create
a rough aging continuity.

Animators Nathan Meier and
Edmund Earle then knitted the
images together seamlessly, with
3D visual-effects artist George Cuddy
putting the finishing touches on the
remarkable transformation.

“I attempted to create a person in
order to emulate the aging process,”
Cerniello, a music video and
commercial editor, writes on his
Vimeo page. “The idea was that
something is happening but you
can’t see it but you can feel it,
like aging itself.”

Here is to aging gracefully and with style!
Thanks artists for putting this together.

What do YOU think of the video and of the aging process in your own life?

Phuket, Thailand or Would you like to go AWOL? Another Way of Living?

AWOL

Most of us think of this word meaning something to do with the military,
being away without leave..but for many of us it means Another Way of Living.

You see, in May, I went to Phuket, Thailand to be in a Reality Show.

AWOL week one

Yes, me, not a movie or tv star, but a long time international Flight attendant.

IMG_1330

Eight of us each week stayed at 2 gorgeous mansions

MANSION inPhuket

complete with our personal
chef staff and housekeeping staff.

Joom and cooks

We were served gourmet Thai food prepared just to our orders

Phuket FOOD
and drivers took us all over to our adventures.
All the while being photographed by a Hollywood film and sound crew

that got just about everything we did or said.

Next day we went to the Children’s Orphanage to repaint their classrooms.

Groupat Mural

See, in 2004 the Tsunami devastated the coastal towns/cities and the orphanage
was rebuilt but needed much TLC= repainting.

Paintroom

While it was over 90 degrees and OVER 90% humidity, no air conditioning, no fans,
we taped the rooms, scraped the walls, and repainted all while being filmed.
It was an amazing experience, a super good feeling despite the discomfort of heat/humidity.
Nothing like that ever felt so good.
Late in the evening, we were all so wound up, we had a giant PAINT FIGHT!
Leftover paint we swiped on each others faces, clothes, arms everywhere!

Fun times!
